How to Find the Right Varicose Vein Treatment for You

Varicose veins in your legs are an unsightly, painful condition that can be treated. The affected vein can be removed from your leg and the blood will flow through healthy veins. If you are suffering from varicose or spider veins, you may want to talk to our specialist, get a diagnosis, and learn about the various varicose vein treatment options you have. Whether your varicose veins can be seen beneath the surface of your skin or not, they can be treated. You may have an ultrasound or other tests to pinpoint the extent of the varicose vein.

The most conservative treatment can be done at home by losing excess weight, getting enough exercise, and not spending long hours standing or sitting. You may also be asked to wear compression stockings for several hours every day to keep the pressure on the affected vein. If conservative treatments don’t help, there are other treatments that can remove the affected vein. The most common treatments are:

Sclerotherapy

During sclerotherapy, we inject a solution directly into the affected small or medium-sized varicose vein. The solution irritates and damages the vein wall so it collapses. It will be absorbed by the body and gradually disappear and the blood will flow through healthy veins. Sclerotherapy has been used for decades to treat varicose and spider veins and is safe and effective. It can be done in our office with no anesthesia.

Endovenous Laser Therapy

Endovenous laser therapy uses laser light to destroy the vein. It is also performed in our office and takes just minutes to complete. Our specialist uses imaging to guide the laser through the vein. It will be directed at several locations and the vein will collapse and gradually be absorbed by the surrounding tissue.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation uses heat to destroy the vein. The probe is guided into the vein using imaging and the heat is applied along the length of the probe. Yet another available varicose vein treatment is microphlebectomy.

All of the above treatments will remove varicose veins. However, new veins may become affected if you continue a lifestyle that contributed to their development.
