What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged rugged-looking veins that are generally caused from excessive amounts of time spent either standing or walking. The longer we’re on our feet, the more pressure is placed on our veins in our lower body, resulting in varicose veins. For some people, varicose veins are strictly an aesthetic issue. However, it may cause others discomfort or pain and can result in greater complications such as ulcers, blood clots, or bleeding.
What do varicose veins look like?
Varicose veins typically look twisted and bulged and are blue or dark purple in color.
What can cause varicose veins?
The two most common causes of varicose veins are aging and pregnancy.
As our bodies age, veins often stretch larger beneath our skin as a result of a loss of elasticity. As the valves in your veins weaken with time, blood flow will become more challenging for your body, causing blood to pool up. This build up of blood results in the veins to swell, making them varicose.
Some pregnant women may notice varicose veins in the feet, ankles, or legs. While pregnancy increases the amount of blood in the body, it does reduce blood circulation below the waist to compensate for the support of the fetus, resulting in varicose veins. Some women may experience more defined varicose veins the longer they’re pregnant. However, their appearance can improve in time following labor.
