ProFractional Resurfacing

Cleveland Cosmetic Clinic | Smith Cosmetic Laser Surgery | Facial Rejuvenation - ProFractional Resurfacing

ProFractional laser treatment is used to treat sun spots, reduce wrinkles, improve uneven pigmentation, reduce stretch marks, and minimize acne scars. The ProFractional laser is a significant improvement over other fractional laser treatments because it leaves the surrounding skin intact. The ProFractional laser produces thousands of deep, tiny columns in your skin without affecting any of the surrounding tissue. As such, discomfort is reduced and healing time is shortened. ProFractional laser treatments promote the skin’s natural process of creating newer, healthier tissue to replaced damaged cells.

How is the ProFractional laser different from other laser treatments?

Prior to the advent of ProFractional laser treatments, two types of laser treatments were available: fully ablative laser treatments and non-ablative treatments. Fully ablative laser treatments vaporize entire layers of skin cells at a very high temperature. While very effective, fully ablative laser treatments are associated with a high incidence of side effects and typically require a lengthy recovery period.

Although a lower incidence of side effects and minimal healing time are associated with non-ablative laser treatments, they require numerous treatments over many months and the results vary widely from patient to patient. ProFractional treatments offer the effectiveness of ablative lasers with the benefits of the gentler, non-ablative lasers.

How does the ProFractional laser work?

The ProFractional laser is designed to target specific areas of damaged tissue. ProFractional laser treatments create microscopic “wounds” within the targeted areas, triggering the body’s natural healing process. As a result, the production of collagen and new, healthy skin cells is accelerated.

What are the risks of ProFractional Laser Treatments?

Swelling and redness are the most common side effects of ProFractional laser treatment. When swelling occurs, it is typically minor and subsides within a day or two. The treatment area may also peel following the procedure. Redness may occur, but it will most likely fade within a few days. The risk of infection or scarring is very limited.

How many treatments will I need?

According to clinical studies, an effective treatment consists of one to three sessions that are spaced approximately four weeks apart. Results are immediate and gradually improve over time. The optimal results of treatment are usually visible in about two to three months following the procedure. This time frame allows for complete healing, replacement of damaged tissue, regeneration of collagen and elastin, and healthy skin cell growth.

Is the ProFractional laser treatment painful?

Most patients describe the treatment as producing a “prickling” sensation. If you prefer, a topical anesthetic can be applied.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

We recommend applying an antimicrobial ointment during the healing process. It’s also advisable to use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher (UVA/UVB) every two hours if you plan to be outdoors. Avoid direct sun exposure during the healing process and for at least 3 months following treatment.
