Radiesse is a dermal filler that stimulates the body’s production of collagen to restore volume. Until somebody finally discovers the fountain of youth, injectable dermal fillers continue to be a very popular cosmetic option to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and restore youthful facial contours. Injectable fillers like Radiesse allow women and men to smooth moderate to severe facial creases and add the desired definition to their cheeks, lips, jawline, and nose just to name a few! [1]

About

FDA-approved Radiesse is one of the several injectable fillers offered at Smith Vein & Cosmetic Surgery. Radiesse is a water-based gel matrix containing calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa) microspheres. This special formula increases facial volume and smoothes wrinkles and creases in two ways: the gel itself and collagen stimulation.[2] When injected, the water-based gel provides an increase in volume on its own. But over time, like all dermal fillers, the gel is reabsorbed by the body. This is where the collagen production that Radiesse initiates gives this filler it’s edge over the competition! After about a month, the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres create a controlled inflammatory response, and the body responds by producing a boost of collagen.[2] This increase in collagen reduces creases and wrinkles, creates youthful contour, and provides an overall rejuvenated appearance from the firm, new tissue that is created during the healing process. The combination of these two effects makes for longer-lasting results since the collagen stimulation continues to take the reigns when the gel itself begins to dissolve.

Radiesse versus Juvéderm

Radiesse and Juvéderm are both injectable dermal fillers and are both made of synthetic substances that are naturally found in our bodies. Radiesse is comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres which contain calcium and phosphate, just like our bones do. [2] Juvéderm is comprised of hyaluronic acid which is found in our connective tissues. While both are very effective fillers, Radiesse is better suited to target specific areas of concern. Since calcium hydroxylapatite is stronger than hyaluronic acid, Radiesse is often used to smooth nasolabial folds and marionette lines and define the chin and jawline. It is also effective for use in the hands to restore lost volume and make them younger-looking. [3] One option isn’t necessarily “better” than the other, they are just better at treating different areas of concern.

If you would like to find out if Radiesse is the right cosmetic procedure for you, contact Smith Vein & Cosmetic Surgery and schedule a consultation. Dr. Smith will be happy to go over all of your options!

Personal Consultation

At your one-on-one consultation with a member of the Smith Vein & Cosmetic Surgery team, you can expect a listening ear to hear your concerns and desires. The team member will then take note of your medical history. If it is deemed that you are a good candidate for Radiesse injections, a personalized treatment plan will be created just for you. In some instances, the injections can be performed on the same day as the consultation. Please ask a member of our team if this is possible when scheduling your consultation.

Preparation

Very little preparation is required prior to dermal filler injections. We ask that you please avoid anti-inflammatory medication and alcoholic beverages several days before your treatment to ensure the best results possible.

Procedure

The treatment process itself is so quick that it can be performed during a lunch break! Performed in the doctor’s office, a local anesthetic or nerve block is used to numb the predetermined areas for maximum comfort. You will be seated either up-right or a bit reclined to see how gravity naturally affects the treatment areas and administer the injections accordingly. The gel solution may be massaged in the treated areas to ensure proper distribution of the filler. Results can be seen immediately following the injections.

We ask that you please contact our office if you have any questions following your treatment. We care deeply about your comfort and will do everything in our power to make sure you are completely satisfied with your results.

Results

Results of Radiesse injections are noticeable immediately. Final results may take a week to see the true outcome. Depending on the areas you had treated, you can expect smoother, more radiant skin and a youthful contour for one year, sometimes longer! [3]

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Botox

Dermal fillers are great for filling in deep creases and adding volume and shape to the face, but if you have smaller dynamic wrinkles you want to smooth, Botox may be a good additional treatment. Botox is also an injectable treatment but it works differently than dermal fillers. Botox is a safe neurotoxin that temporarily weakens or stops the targeted muscles from moving. It is often used on the forehead and near the temples to stop the formation of crow’s feet and forehead lines. These two non-surgical treatments are quite often performed together.

Sun Damage Correction

If your goal is radiant younger-looking skin, sun damage correction is an excellent choice to add alongside your dermal filler treatment. At Smith Vein & Cosmetic Surgery, we love performing sun damage correction treatments because it helps our patients turn back the clock and regain a youthful appearance! We offer several sun damage correction treatments including chemical peels, erbium laser skin resurfacing, and ProFractional laser.

Juvéderm

Juvéderm is another dermal filler Dr. Smith offers at both his Concord, OH and Middlefield, OH locations. While the general goal of a dermal filler is to smooth facial creases and increase facial contour, different fillers are better suited to treat different concerns. Juvéderm is quite popularly used to fill the undereye area and lips. It can also be used for additional areas of concern though like marionette lines and jaw definition.

FAQ

Are all dermal fillers the same?

No, dermal fillers can be comprised of different substances such as calcium hydroxylapatite, hyaluronic acid, poly-l-lactic acid, and polymethyl methacrylate. Each filler has its pros and cons. Dr. Smith will be happy to advise you which filler he thinks will benefit you most for your specific concerns during a private consultation.

Are dermal fillers the same as Botox?

No, dermal fillers and Botox are both temporary injectable treatments but target different areas of concern and tackle them differently. Dermal fillers quite literally “fill” areas with volume loss, lost definition, or deep creases. Botox weakens the underlying muscle of a targeted area in order to reduce wrinkles. Both treatments are commonly performed during the same visit.

Can I get Botox and Radiesse at the same time?

Yes! Radiesse and Botox are commonly injected during the same office visit since they remedy different facial concerns. Radiesse is meant to address loss of volume in the face and/or hands and restore or provide lost facial definition. Botox is meant to address fine lines and wrinkles by stopping the muscle movement that causes these concerns.
