Spider Veins Treatments

Cleveland Vein Clinic | Smith Vein Institute | Spider Veins Treatments

We offer a free consultation. Usually we use a combination of treatments depending on the size and location of the spider veins. We combine injection therapy, laser, and VeinGogh therapy. Most spider veins require 3-5 sessions spaced 1 month apart for maximal clearing. The laser can treat many skin types but you cannot to be tanning while we do the treatments. Tanning and skin color typically do not interfere with injection therapy. Once the treatments are complete, tanning can be resumed as normal.

What is the VeinGogh?

For Spider veins on the face, we like to use the VeinGogh. The VeinGogh Ohmic Thermolysis System provides a superior solution for the treatment of fine telangiectasia, spider veins and small angiomas, especially recalcitrant vessels that have shown a resistance to sclerotherapy, laser or IPL treatment.

VeinGogh is the fast, easy way to reliably treat these and other cosmetically unacceptable conditions, often with less discomfort compared to older therapies.

While lasers and other light-based solutions are skin-type dependent and have an inherent risk of injury, VeinGogh uses a hair-thin, insulated probe to thermocoagulate and instantly eliminate vessels dependably, repeatably, on any skin-type and on any part of the body.

What solutions are used to inject?

We use Sotradecol or polidocanol which are both FDA approved solutions for spider and varicose veins. We do not use hypertonic saline because it is painful, stains the skin and can cause ulceration. The solutions we use are not painful at all. The solution causes the vessel walls to be damaged and then your body reabsorbs the damage just like a bruise.

What laser do you use?

We use a combination of the 1064 nm Sciton laser and IPL/BBL therapy along with injection because it decreases the amount of blood in the spider veins so you have less of a chance of staining. Using the combination we cause a double injury effect and can fade your spider veins much quicker.

I’ve had injections before and they didn’t work.

The reason the injections didn’t work is typically because the cause of the problem was not identified and treated. When you come for your consultation, we will offer to show you the veins that are causing your spider veins and tell you how we treat those either at the same time in most cases to clear your spider veins.

Do I have to wear compression stockings after?

Yes we have you wear compression stockings for 1-2 weeks after the procedure. This helps to “stick” the vessel walls together and speeds up the fading process. We will supply your stockings here on your first visit.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a vein treatment procedure used to chemically ablate superficial veins. This procedure uses tiny needles to inject a liquid or foam chemical agent into visible surface veins. The injected chemical solution causes the treated veins to shrink and collapse over time.

In most cases, multiple treatment sessions are needed. Side effects are rare, with the most common being dark staining. Following a sclerotherapy procedure, compression stockings are worn to prevent the treated veins from carrying blood. Approximately 70% of veins treated by sclerotherapy will disappear with each treatment, unless their underlying cause is not treated. This is why Vein Specialists at Smith Vein Institute recommend a non-invasive evaluation first be performed to evaluate for underlying venous disease. Despite all the advancements in laser technology, sclerotherapy still remains the overwhelming choice of patients and their doctors for spider vein treatment. Why, because sclerotherapy is more effective and less painful than any other treatment available for spider veins.
